3 Reasons You’ll Love Gillette Castle State Park

  1. Fascinating History

This towering mansion that greatly resembles a medieval castle was built by actor and playwright William Hooker Gillette. A talented and well-educated figure, Gillette made a name for himself by performing at the Globe Theater in Boston; his most famous role was his playing the beloved detective, Sherlock Holmes. After many years of acting, Gillette decided it was time to start settling down and create a retirement home for himself in the early 1900s, which was how the Gillette Castle (also known as the Seventh Sister) originated. The magnificent, 84-acre estate took almost 5 years to construct, comprised of local fieldstone and steel. Today, you can wander through this one-of-a-kind home to see some of the artistic works of William Gillette, like his beautiful woodcarvings and unique built-in couches.
